HIKOKUJI

TOKYO – Most visitors to Kamakura on the outskirts of Tokyo pass up this exquisite Zen Buddhist temple in favor of the more famous and larger Daibutsu and Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine.  Shrouded in a serenely beautiful garden of centuries-old bamboo (it’s sometimes called the bamboo temple) Hokokuji is a small, peaceful temple and one of those special places you often find by accident or are introduced to by friends.  A nice touch are the benches and green tea stand on the edge of the bamboo garden where you can take a moment to sit, and sip Japanese tea while you bask in the lovely surroundings…so very zen.  A ten minute bus ride (#5) from Kamakura station.
