NEW YORK – It calls itself “New York’s sexiest bar and lounge” and that might be about right. Madame X is downright slutty – think New Orleans bordello meets dive bar. Though not very fancy, this joint is definitely provocative. The whole place is bathed in red – from the walls to the lighting to the velour (or is it velvet?) that supplies the background for the headboards mounted underneath the bar. And, the drinks are cheap to boot – $7 for a martini and $4 for a beer on a recent visit (bargain basement prices for NYC). Plus, the music is awesome! The DJ spins an eclectic mix of tunes from various eras, with 70s funk giving way to 80s gold, giving way to 90s smashes and so on (I personally love that a few relatively obscure jams seem to find their way into the mix). The crowd is young and multicultural, but doesn’t tend to include the dreaded hipsters who frequent other Village watering holes.
What is the little thing that makes it worth visiting? Atmosphere, atmosphere and atmosphere. This is the perfect spot to find your sexy.
Where is it? 94 Houston (pronounced “how-ston”, for you out-of-towners) Street, between LaGuardia Place and Thompson.
